I had the incredible opportunity to design and build a bar with my husband (then fiance), Justin. He had been in this Short North storefront for 9 years as another concept and was ready to recreate the space into something new. He wanted it to be an homage to his Grandfather, Eugene, who was a WWII veteran. Eugene was a huge influence in Justin’s life, which led him to join the Army himself.
We designed the space with a mid-century feel and a hint of Military. Eugene’s Canteen also features local popup kitchens, local beers & spirits, billiards, and a Wall of Heroes, where anyone can bring in a photo of themselves or a loved one in uniform to be displayed.
This was a true soup-to-nuts project that required serious resourcefulness and we were excited for the challenge. For the new layout, we had to strategically work around the existing plumbing and electrical. We honed in on the back-bar area, which serves as the focal point, then moved out from there. Starting from the studs, we hammered, painted and wallpapered our way to something we were proud to call our own. Wood accents created warmth and approachability. Our poured cement bar top offered function and strength. Bold wallpaper drew people in the door.
The primary script logo was inspired by vintage bar neon signs. Because of the various brand applications, the family of logos offers versatility and flexibility while keeping a cohesive look and feel.
The menu is designed to feel like you’re being handed details of your next Mission.
The menu would change periodically so printing in-house was important. We strategically used standard paper sizes in different orientations and cropping to create a varied and layered look to the pages. This helped to separate the different sections as well as easily accommodate changes.
